New Key to Weaving

Whether you are a new weaver, an experienced weaver, or even a weaving teacher, you will find Mary Black’s instructional weaving book to be a helpful resource to get started or to verify techniques.  The author provides a thorough explanation of the how-tos and the whys of weaving processes.  The format of the chapters explains the theory and moves through a serious of lessons that you can try on your loom or simply read about and understand.  Weave structures are described for their detail of design, qualities and some historical notes.  Additionally, Mary Black suggests suitable materials for the warp and weft, and practical uses of the resulting fabrics.  At the back of the book is a multi-page table listing articles to weave, with suggested materials, threading and sleying. Sinking and rising shed tie-ups, treadling, draw-downs and photographs round out the lessons.  Weave structures included, among others, are numerous patterns of twills, overshot, crackle, summer-and-winter, and Bronson.  There is even a chapter on Tartan weaves! Rounding out your lessons on structures, the book contains chapters on information including weaving with handspun yarns, preparing warps, threading and managing the loom and weavings from beginning to end, among many other helpful lessons and problem solutions, plus a glossary of terms and translations in foreign languages. The New Key to Weaving presents a logical arrangement of information for the beginner weaver as well as an authoritative reference for the more experienced.
