Pattern and Loom

A practical study of the development of weaving techniques in China, Western Asia and Europe by John Becker

The author and his workshop team studied ancient weavings and loom designs to determine the types of looms and the weaving techniques that were used to create the fabric designs. Then they created the weavings with a mix of the original techniques and modern equipment.  The book discusses their process in recreating the fabrics.  The experiments were intended to inspire today’s weavers to use ancient techniques with modern materials.

Learn about how pattern rods and doup heddles were used to create patterning in a most efficient manner on two shaft looms. Read of the ingenious, fascinating techniques used centuries ago and how these weavings could be duplicated with modern methods.

Weaving techniques and fabrics differed between Eastern and Western civilizations based on materials available. Becker describes Eastern Asia weaving techniques and fabric design capable with their abundance of long smooth silk thread.  In contrast, Western Europeans wove with wool, flax and cotton on different looms.

This book was written more for the weaving scholar and professional, than the casual home weaver. However, for anyone not interested in the very technical explanations, it is simple to spot and skim read through the dry material, to focus on the more fascinating descriptions of weaving techniques.
