The Weaving, Spinning, and Dyeing Book By Rachel Brown, 2nd edition
This is another all encompassing how-to book covering the tools, techniques and materials for weaving, spinning and dyeing. It is appropriate for beginners through experts. You are sure to learn something new.
This book discusses a bit of the history of each of the arts and the various equipment, just enough to be interesting. Several chapters are dedicated to a number of types of looms and weaving, including card weaving, inkle, hopi belt, backstrap, Navajo and the treadle loom. The author describes each loom, its uses, components, and easy to follow warping, weaving and finishing processes. Each chapter provides a number of projects for the looms just covered.
The spinning chapter steps you through facts on wool and sheep breeds and preparing the fiber for spinning. The book describes various types of spindles and wheels, and finally, how to spin.
The dying chapter describes natural and synthetic dyes, the equipment, dye recipes and dying processes. Finally, the book discusses design and color, and even a brief chapter on making a business of your craft. It is written in a casual narrative style that flows through the topics and is easy to understand.
A large section at the end of the book lists suppliers of weaving and spinning equipment, yarns and fibers. There is also a glossary and index.
