What’s Ahead in ‘10
Every year the program co-ordinator faces the challenge of arranging new and interesting presentations. Having some new members affords the opportunity to revisit topics from the past. Inevitably there will be some repeats. It’s hard not to. But sometimes approaching them from a different angle or putting a new twist on them (no pun intended) can give vitality to an otherwise ho-hum topic. That’s our goal for this year. Here are some of the topics we have tossed around for upcoming programs: Bobbin lace making; Teneriffe lace and its cousin, Dorset buttons; shibori dying; papermaking; collapse fabrics with high twist yarn; spinning and carding cotton; studying single ply and triple ply yarns, embellishing with beads. Of special interest is a program we will begin that we are calling Understanding Weave Structure (UWS). Over the course of the next two years we will periodically chose a specific weave structure and study it using pattern drafts and woven samples. A warped loom will be available to allow further study by hands on weaving. Some of the UWS’s weaves will be: summer & winter, M’s & O’s, leno, shadow weave, krokbrad, laces, and overshot. New weavers as well as seasoned ones can benefit from studying weaves that they may not understand or have never tried. Suggestions for additional weaves that may be of interest to any member are welcomed.
Upcoming Programs Since weather in January can be dicey, we have scheduled a movie that has been shown at the Waynesburg Wool Festival. Made by locals, it traces Waynesburg’s history as a successful sheep producing region. It’s well done and presents interesting facts and stories from old timers who lived during its heyday. February’s meeting will focus on fiber jewelry and accessories. Pam Frenchak will talk a bit about the jewelry she displayed at the Guild’s anniversary exhibit in 2007. After that, the floor will be open to anyone who owns or has made some fiber jewelry. If it was made and used some interesting technique or special loom, we’d like to know about it. Even if it wasn’t handmade by you, show it anyway. (No scarves, please. Only accessories and jewelry). Sometimes, an amazing program results from members just sharing and talking.

Book Review Please give my greetings and regrets at the guild meeting this week To all Butler Guild members - Unfortunately, I have to be in an all day meeting on the day of the Guild’s Christmas meeting and This issue is the Delegate Registration Book for HGA Convergence 2010 in Albuquerque NM next July. Information includes the full guide to class sessions, seminars, tours, exhibits, the registration form and trip logistics. The issue also has many photos of one-of-a-kind fiber art creations. New book recommendation – If you are interested in a purchasing a new book, I recommend Respect the Spindle, by Abby Franquemont. There is a review of the book in SpinOff, opposite page 76. I’ve taken one of Abby’s spindle workshops. She teaches some great techniques on how to maximize output on the drop spindle. She also really understands and explains well the dynamics of how spindles work and how and why spindles (versus wheels) produce the type of yarn that they do. The Guild library could use a book on this topic. It is $15.61+shipping on Amazon. Regular price: $22.95. Note from the Editor Christine sent me information from Lark Books. They are looking for projects done in felt ing to be included in a book for future publication. For all the e-mail members I have sent attach ments that have all the information relating to this. For all the snail mail members, to print all the info would take up too much space. If any member who gets the newsletter in the mail wants more information on this, please call me and I will make sure you get it.
Item for Sale An item for the next Guild news letter… Hope you are keeping warm. Good time for knitting.
